Byron Bay’s Dreamiest Beaches You Won’t Want To Miss…

Known for their natural beauty, legendary surf and stunning backdrops, Byron Bay’s beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world. With the crystal-blue waters, thin white sand, and small crowds – you’ll feel like you’re living in dream!

There’s something for everyone – whether you’re looking for a safer spot to swim with the kids, learn to surf or play in the waves, you’re spoiled with options to choose from. If you’re lucky, one of the locals will tell you about the secret beaches too, where you’ll feel transported to Jurassic Park – we’ll keep those ones to ourselves though, because that’s what makes them so special… but there is a hint below.

Before we start, our number 1 tip – go early! It’ll be less windy and less crowded. Wake for the sunrise walk from The Pass to Cape Byron Lighthouse. Plunge yourself in the ocean at Wategos on the way back down. You’ll feel refreshed and energised and view Byron at its best.

Here’s some of the best beaches in Byron Bay:

  • Belongil Beach – From Main Beach towards North Byron, this long stretch of beach (with a dog beach in between) is protected from winds and has small waves making for easy swimming! The last entrance before the Tyagarah Nature Reserve is at the Elements Resort, where the Belongil Creek meets the ocean. Enjoy gorgeous sunsets with views of Cape Byron and the Lighthouse.
  • Main Beach – Patrolled every day and easily accessible with plenty of parking, enjoy takeaway from Fishheads, Street Sushi, Slice Pizzeria, or one of the many nearby restaurants either on the grassy area watching the waves crash, or sitting on the sand catching some rays. There’s also a shaded children’s playground and entertainment from The Beach Hotel nearby.
  • Clarkes Beach – Just down from Main Beach is Clarkes Beach where you’ll find more space for you and the family, refreshments and snacks at Beach Cafe, and a large carpark. There’s more parking  just up the road at Captain Cook Lookout, which also has access to Clarkes Beach.
  • The Pass – Learn how to surf or catch some waves where you might spot some dolphins having a play! A great spot to watch the sunset, The Pass is perfect at any time of day as it’s protected from the wind and open ocean.
  • Wategos Beach – Number 4 on Condé Nast’s Traveller Magazine’s “34 Best Beaches in the World” in February 2024, Wategos Beach is a sheltered beach offering calm swimming conditions and perfect longboard waves with the stunning backdrop of the North Byron Shire and Mount Warning. Grab a drink or lunch at Rae’s and unwind in style.
  • Little Wategos – Over the rocks from Wategos, offers a memorable backdrop for a romantic wedding proposal. Wander down at dusk with a blanket and your heart for a spectacular sunset. It’s a special place for many, including the Arakwal people, the original custodians of this area, who used the most easterly point (Walgun) for ceremonial purposes.
  • Cosy Corner at Tallow Beach – Protected from Northerly winds, Cosy Corner is a local favourite for a beach day, especially in the summer! Great waves, ample space for beach games, and safe swimming in the corner makes it a special spot. Limited parking available so plan accordingly.
  • Broken Head Beach – At the other end of Tallow Beach, and protected from Southerly winds, is family-favourite Broken Head Beach. Positioned at the edge of the Broken Head Nature Reserve, this one’s more secluded and remote yet bustling with energy and activity! Perfect for swimming, surfing and exploring, you’ll want to include it in your plans.

Enjoy magic moments and create lifetime memories at one of the many beaches in Byron Bay.

A word of caution – some beaches are remote and most are unpatrolled so please take care, stay safe and swim in the white water if unfamiliar with the area as the rips can be hard to spot.

We can’t wait to welcome you!
